Idol Top 7 Perform

Tonight's theme is music from 2010 until today.  Akon is the guest mentor.

Skylar gets to go first.  She chooses "Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You" by Kellie Pickler.  Jimmy & Akon were impressed during rehearsals.  She's playing guitar tonight.  She did a great job.  Randy said she could have a hit with a song like that.  He said it was "crazy hot."  Jen said it was a perfect way to start the show.  Steven loved it.

Colton is singing "Love the Way You Lie," the Skylar Grey version.  Jimmy tries to get him to find a way to surpass Phillip this week.  He's at the piano this week, backed by a string section.  He does a fine job, but he just doesn't wow me.  His voice isn't unique...there's nothing that stands out about him when you listen with your eyes closed.  Apparently, I'm in the minority--the crowd seemed to love it.  So did the judges.

We get another duo performance from Phillip & Elise.  They're singing "Somebody I Used to Know" by Gotye.  Hey, just heard this on "Glee" last night.  See, I love Phillip's voice...he's got that raspiness.  They do a good job.  They have good chemistry together, even though the song's about a couple that fell apart.  Judges loved it.  They all agreed that Elise was better.  She chose the song, so it made sense.  Randy suggested the next time they do a song that Phillip choose a song that he's really comfortable with.

Jessica is singing "Stuttering" by Jazmine Sullivan.  Jimmy and Akon are besides themselves in rehearsal.  Jimmy said, "That voice can move anybody.  She's got soul, power, finesse..."  Jimmy said he and Akon were in London before the Final 13 (before Jimmy got involved with the show).  Akon told him that Jessica is the one.  He said, "Feed her a few more hamburgers and she's ready to go."  Akon wanted to steal her.  Man. She is amazing.  Bravo.  Randy said it was superb.  Jen loved it.  Steven said every time she sings, he forgets where he is.

Joshua is doing Bruno Mars' "Runaway Baby," but first, he gets a birthday greeting from Fantasia.  He wanted to do something we could "boogie out" to and get away from the ballads.  Great performance...so much fun!  Standing O from the judges.  That was awesome.  Judges say he has everything.

Colton & Skylar do another duet.  They're doing "Don't You Want To Stay" by Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson.  Skylar was a little pitchy on this one, but they did a good job.  Steven said it was a beautiful duet.  Jen loved the harmonies.  Uh-oh, what's this?  Randy said it was just okay, and he pointed out that it was a little pitchy here and there.

Hollie is doing a Pink song, "Perfect."  Jimmy said she's missing a certain type of experience....she needs to "turn the gas up" and make the leap to being a professional.  Akon told her she has to really, really want it.  And that she has to believe she'll be perfect in her performance.  Her voice really shines tonight.  And she gave me chills on her last notes.  This was her best so far.  Jen said she sang beautifully tonight.  Steven said it wasn't perfect.  I don't know what he's hearing.  Randy said it wasn't perfect, but it was a lot better than where she was last week and that she redeemed herself.  They really don't like her for some reason.

Phillip does an acoustic version of Maroon 5's "Give a Little More."  Nice.  He did a good job.  Steven said he looks like a Steve McQueen/Johnny Cash guy.  Jen thought it was underwhelming.  She thinks she's seen the same performance a few times.  I can see her point there.  Randy agreed with JLo.  He didn't think it was a wow moment.

Hollie, Jessica & Joshua perform Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger."  We learn that Josh & Hollie are best friends on the show.  Jessica said she's the 3rd wheel with them.  Their verses weren't great, but the chorus was really strong.  Judges loved it.  Randy gave the edge to Josh in the trio.

Elise is singing Lady Gaga's "You and I."  She wanted to play drums at first, but Jimmy & Akon said she was trying too hard and needed to focus on her singing.  Still, she's at the piano when she starts.  I think her voice is perfect for this song.  She rocked it out tonight.  Great job.  Randy announced that Elise is back!

My top 3:  Jessica, Joshua & Elise
Middle: Joshua
Bottom 3: Colton, Skylar and Hollie

I suspect Hollie will go home.   After that, voting will be tough amongst the remaining 6.
