Scandal night on Idol

So, the rumors were swirling around today that Jermaine Jones was being eliminated from Idol tonight. Turns out his sob story about being estranged from his father was untrue. Hey, that's no reason to kick someone off the show. But, lying about your criminal past and having two outstanding warrants for your arrest is. Scandalous. Ryan's all mysterious in the beginning, hinting that someone had to be eliminated, but he doesn't say who right off the bat. As if America didn't already know. Way to keep people watching the show, Ryan! Scandal is always good for ratings.

But, the show must go on.

Tonight the contestants are singing songs from the year they were born. Songs will range from 1983 to 1995. Will.i.am is the guest mentor.

Phillip is up first. We learn from his parents that he was a premature baby with big health issues when he was born. Last week we heard that Phillip has been to the doctor. Now we learn that he's got kidney stones and has to go to the have surgery that night of the rehearsal with Jimmy & Will.i.am. Will was impressed that he sang so well seeing as he's on his way to the hospital. Phil's singing "Hard to Handle," originally by Otis Redding, but redone by The Black Crowes in 1990. He looks and sounds great! Great song for him. I'd buy this. Great way to start the show! Randy said that's a great song for him to do as a single. JLo said it was perfect. Steven likes that he picks songs that match his voice & character.

Jessica's next. She was born in 1995 and is singing Gloria Estefan's "Turn the Beat Around." She's got on some hot metallic, sparkly, sequin pants--I love them! She can belt out anything. I just love her. Fun performance. Steven told her not to stray too far from the ballads she does. He and JLo said her rhythm was a little off. Randy agreed. He felt the song didn't allow her to show off her big voice.

Heejun will be singing a Richard Marx tune from 1989. Uh-oh...I got burned out on R.M. back in the day. His parents were so sweet--his mom got choked up when she said he always would wake up with a smile in his face. He's singing "Right Here Waiting." Man, if I got through my life without hearing this song again, that'd be just fine with me. HeeJun does an okay job with it, but I just can't get excited about it. Randy said it was pitchy, and that it felt like he was out of breath the whole time. Randy thought it was the wrong song. He was missing the urban, R&B swag that Heejun's shown before. JLo and Steven basically agreed, but JLo still loves his tone, and says he has a special voice.

Elise was born in 1983 and will be singing Tina Tuner's "Let's Stay Together." She sounds great this week. Good call for the judges to keep her over Jeremy. Steven loves her voice and loved it. Jennifer said she showed America who Elise is. "It was a beautiful, beautiful thing." Randy said, "America, Elise is back!" He said this is why they loved her at her first audition.

Deandre was born in 1994. He had a hard time with song choice--he started off with Can You Feel the Love Tonight, but then changed to Endless Love. Didn't someone do this last year? I don't like making a duet into a solo song. The hair is out this week, but it's a slow song, so hopefully there won't be too much flipping of the hair. I think this was a terrible song choice for him. No me gusta. Plus he's pitchy. He ended strongly (well, except for that high note), but it wasn't enough. Jen said he can sing anything, and he sang this beautifully, but she didn't think it was the right song. Randy said it was boring and safe. He needs excitement every time he comes out.

Here comes Shannon who was born in 1995. Jimmy suggests No Doubts Don't Speak. Don't know if he really wants her to sing that, or if he just wanted to show off some AT&T phone. (Actually, I *know* it was just to show advertise. She's singing "One Sweet Day" by Mariah and Boyz II Men. I can tell during rehearsals that it's a bad choice. Will says he shouldn't hear her breathing during the song and suggested she practice while laying down to get more control of her breathing. To me, it sounds like she started off on the wrong key. She's all over the place. I don't care for it. JLo said she did a beautiful job. Really?? Steven said she did a good job too.

Colton was born in 1991 and he's singing "Broken Heart" by White Lion. Jimmy and Will point out that no one knows this song. Will said it needed to be edgier. They did it with just the piano, and supposedly it improved. I don't like this song. I wouldn't have liked it in the 90's and I don't like it now. I guess he does okay, but I just don't care for it. JLo liked it. Steven didn't. Randy liked it.

Erika's next. She was born in 1985 and is singing Bryan Adams' "Heaven." What the hell...she's got some kind of movie going on behind her. Where'd that come from? It's making me dizzy. I didn't like her pacing. It was just okay. Steven said she was too busy with it, but he likes her voice. (My sister wonders if someone told Steven he was too nice because tonight he's come with a bunch of criticism.

And now comes the Jermaine drama. They are putting all this out there on camera for all to see. Nigel Lithgow and another guy met with him about his criminal charges. Fake name to the police one time, then arrested again, and another fake name. Four active warrants out for him. The fact that he didn't disclose these things is why he's off the show. WHY are they doing this?!? It's SO unfair. They've never called anyone out on camera before. The show wasted so much time with him...they added him as the 13th contestant, and now look what happens. And then they have the nerve to tell him they just heard him sing and it was the best they've ever heard him. THIS IS SO WRONG.

Skylar was born in 1994. She's doing Bonnie Raitt's "Love's Sneaking Up on You." Jimmy & Will try to suggest a bunch of other songs, most of which she's never heard of. Will wants her to sing Coolio's "Fantastic Voyage." And says it'd be Ghountry - Ghetto Country. She stuck with Bonnie Raitt. She did a good job. Steven & Jennifer liked it. So did Randy.

Joshua is singing Michael Bolton's version of "When a Man Loves a Woman" from 1992. Will predicts that Joshua is going to tear the roof down. And he does. He took his jacket off toward the end, or as my sister put it, "He got a little sexy, sexy there." That was phenomenal! I will definitely buy it! Judges LOVED it.

Last up is Hollie who was born in 1993. She's taking on Celine's "Power of Love." And she knocks it out! What a voice! Randy said she blew it out the box.

Faves tonight were Joshua, Phillip, Elise and Hollie. My least favorite performances tonight were DeAndre and Colton. Since we're down one contestant this week, I imagine at some point in the future, there will be a week where no one has to go home, and then the following week, two will go. Will it be this week and next, or will they save it?

Tune in tomorrow!
